To the surprise of no one, Switchfoot was the big winner of the year. They claimed top honors for Nothing Is Sound, selling nearly 450,000 copies. They also took fourth place on continued strong sales of The Beautiful Letdown, with over 400,000 sold. Casting Crowns nearly matched that success, however, following up their highly successful debut Casting Crowns (in seventh place with approximately 360,000 units sold), with a second place showing for Lifesong, selling over 430,000 copies. Crossover artists Relient K took advantage of exposure on MTV place third with their album, MMHMM, finishing just ahead of Switchfoot at over 421,000 sales. The WoW series continues to be a big item in Christian and Gospel markets, charting four of the top thirteen selling albums of the year. Also found in this Top 20 list are such signature artists as Third Day (Wherever You Are – 12th), Chris Tomlin (Arriving – 14th) and Jeremy Camp (Restored – 15th). Longtime favorites Jars of Clay find themselves in 19th position with their Redemption Songs project, and the ever-present TobyMac rounds out the tally with Welcome to Diverse City. Other artists making the cut include the likes of Donnie McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, Natalie Grant and Kirk Franklin. Even the guys who bridged the gap between Christmas and Rock Opera, Trans Siberian Orchestra, made it into 16th position with Christmas Eve (and Other Stories). Also, the CMTA began tracking digital album downloads in the second half of 2005. Once again, Switchfoot took top honors, with Relient K and Casting Crowns exchanging second and third positions. The David Crowder Band checks in at number four with their release, Collision, and Chris Tomlin rounds out the top five. - Ben swfDISCOGRAPHY
